XCHANGES GALLERY JULY 1st FUNDRAISER
CANDY COAT
OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Xchanges Gallery announces an Open Call for Submissions for our July 1st fund-raising exhibition CANDY COAT. The direction of this exhibition is designed to have a commercial approach with the intention of creating a seductive, desirable and fun appeal to our gallery audience and artist members for our fundraiser.

What are the first things that come to mind when you think of CANDY?

CANDY is a commodity that is highly desirable by most people and sought after for its sweet taste, appearance, and overall gratifying effect when eaten. CANDY has a long history in Pop Culture and the art of designing CANDY for consumption now has its place in the world trading markets. Entire stores are dedicated to CANDY and when travelling many find CANDY an interesting souvenir and cultural experience.

The design of CANDY has many subliminal levels of creation based on the market for which it is intended. CANDY for children varies from CANDY for adults and new markets for CANDY are constantly being created. Intense visual design elements are used in making a seductive external appearance that will activate and titillate numerous senses within the consumer; however, it is the pleasurable taste linked to a physical and psychological experience that ultimately seduces one into being hooked. The physical sensation in the movement of the tongue and mouth reduces the object as it dissolves into a pleasant memory. The primary senses of vision and smell, activates in the brain with a perception for taste which creates saliva and therefore a psychological and physical desire for CANDY. Marketing is intended to be seductive, tasty and fun promoting a pleasurable experience to ensure that the consumer will be back for more.

The CANDY twist: CANDY is often used as a bribe or as a reward to subliminally get people to do what you want. Propaganda, love, deception, evangelism, commercialism, survival, festive, holidays, tradition, the list for CANDY’S influence in society goes on…

Can you create saliva with your work or can you change the ideals of the consumer based on your bribe with CANDY propaganda?
